Leo, there isn't much traffic on this site during the summer.  However, the Snow Country will be starting in just a couple of months.

Cheers!

Folks, Leo set this forum up for MI shooters -- we're a littled scattered... any thoughts about a getting together for a beer... especially someone that went to Perry this year?  I hope to shoot Prone in the matches this year in the Snow Country league... drop back a note and get me out of the house... All the best, Leo (aka Olive).

I've been playing around with pistol ammo for my Mark III Bullseye gun.

CCI SV shot well, but it became hard to come by so I tried some Alguila Pistol Match.

Worked well in my pistol, when I re-ordered they sent Alguila Rifle Match. On my chrono it's the same velocity as the pistol
ammo. Weighs out at exactly the same specs. I have suspicions it's the same stuff re-boxed.

Since we're talking about ammunition (well, kind of), has anyone ever tried using smallbore pistol match ammo in a rifle.   A friend of mine asked me this question and I have never heard much mention of it.    It would seem to me that pistol ammo would use a much faster burning powder so it burns in a short barrel, as in a centerfire pistol.
Has anyone ever tried this?

Don't plan to mess with it.  Although, I might carefully watch you at Perry for the next couple of years.  Just waiting for the moment when there is a fire sale.

Cheers!

One thing all of this does prove is that a great action, outstanding barrel and the best bedding possible will make even so-so ammunition shoot better than it probably should (:>).

Leo:

After shooting for a few years now (and building a few rifles) I just think sometimes we get lucky. Some rifles just shoot well (all the way around) with most anything they are fed.

I think its far more than just the barrel though. The barrel is 90% of the equasion - but you need a solid action, good ignition, and good stress free bedding to bring out the best in a gun.

Then there's the whole comfort thing - we talked a while back about rifles that shot lights out that we (for whatever reason) just never shot well. They didn't feel right, were not comfortable. One particular rifle I sold - the new owner shot it FAR better than I EVER had!

That Stolle of yours is a great gun..............some advise, resist the urge to mess with it!!!

Allow a minor clarification.  The H&R had a factory barrel.  I didn't see that the action was worth putting much investment into.  Shot one ten shot clean with it on the A-36, and then sold it.

The 40X had a Lilja.  The 2013 had two barrels, a Hart, and a Lilja (as I recall).  The Lilja as a 1-16.5 (Kevin correct me if I got this incorrect).  The Swindlehurst has a Hart, and a Kreiger.  I don't use the Kreiger much, it doesn't appear to be as good as the Hart.

The Swindlehurst with the Hart is the one that shoots poor ammo well.  I just shot a 198 on the A-36 with irons using it.  I'm not ready to take it to the league shoot-off, but it shoots well.

Leo, you stated that all the rifles had custom barrels.    My first question would be were they all from the same manufacturer and who chambered and installed them?   Do they all have the same headspace, twist, etc...?
Is it a custom barrel on the H & R too?  I have seen some H & R's shooting standard ammo just pound the dickens out of the x ring.
I can't get my Anschutz squirrel rifle (m-164) to shoot CCI standard accurately (:>).    That's an accomplishment to get that accuracy from CCI.
